This little “Betty Crocker’s Cook Book for Boys and Girls” is how it all started folks. When I was little I found this in the drawer under my Grandma Helen’s oven, with a set of old hand crank beaters. The cookbook originally belonged to my Aunt Joanne and I would imagine my Grandma giving her baking lessons as a child. Both of my older sisters fondly remember her giving them baking lessons…especially her sharing with them how to make her perfect pie pastry! Unfortunately by the time I was old enough to be in the kitchen, Alzheimer’s had already begun to steal her away from us. I never did.
A few of you have asked me to write about owning my own business. You wonder what it is like to own your own business. Well let me tell you this: I was so ignorant. I had no idea what it was truly like to own and operate a business. Here is what I thought it would be like… I thought I would go online register a business and print out my little paper saying I had paid $20 for a license and I would now begin to rule the world. What happened was more like… I printed that piece of paper which I was shocked to learn was not.
Perhaps you’ve found yourself wondering about the baker at Sweetie Pie’s. Perhaps now you’re questioning the Star Trek reference in the Blog title…well we all have our weaknesses. The number one question people ask me when they find out I’m a baker is either when did you start baking or how did you know you wanted to be a baker. Actually that’s not true, everyone asks “What’s your favorite thing to bake?” to which I want to say “What is your favorite report to analyze?” or “Which is your favorite mail delivery route?”. It’s an impossible question to truly answer, so I shall wax nostalgic about my childhood culinary memories..
A group of fabulous Niagara Artisans and Vendors are rallying together to support a great cause. The people in the Philippines are still suffering after Typhoon Haiyan and all donations we raise will be given to Samaritans Purse to help those in need. We will have our booth set up with Pies, Tarts and Cookies as well as a booth for Bumblebee with jams and gift boxes. Itty Bitty Pie Company will also be on hand to tempt you with sweet and savoury delights. There will be a silent auction for you to bid on items donated by the vendors and local businesses with 100% of the proceeds.
